Tips for a Successful Application

1

Personal Email Address: Apply with your personal email address, meaning the email address is not owned by a parent/guardian or high school institution. Ensure you will have access to this account after high school graduation so you can maintain communication with VMI offices.

2

Take Your Time: It is crucial to fill out your application completely and accurately. Details matter.

3

Social Security Number: Needed for federal financial aid consideration.

Moe Tips

1
Make sure your application is complete — missing documents can delay your review. Double-check that all transcripts, test scores, and recommendations have been submitted.
2
Write your essay in your own voice. Admissions counselors read thousands of essays — authenticity stands out more than trying to impress.
3
Connect with your regional admissions counselor. They can answer questions specific to your situation and guide you through the process.

Additional Information

Eligibility

The Institute seeks to admit young men and women who aspire to both an academic degree and a military commission as the hallmarks of a complete VMI education. Applicants are normally not less than sixteen (16) or more than twenty-two (22) years of age at matriculation and may not be married and/or the parent of a child. An age waiver may be granted for an applicant who has served on active duty in the armed forces, or if other circumstances dictate a waiver of the policy. Read more about all eligibility requirements.

NCAA Athlete Requirements

VMI competes in NCAA Division I athletics as a member of the Southern Conference. Student-athletes interested in competing at VMI should connect directly with coaches in their sport of interest. Athletic recruitment is coordinated between the Admissions Office and the Athletics Department.

Standardized Tests Notice

VMI requires SAT or ACT scores for all first-year applicants. There is no minimum score requirement — test scores are considered as one component of a holistic review. VMI’s SAT school code is 5858 and ACT school code is 4418. Score Choice is accepted.

International applicants whose first language is not English must also submit TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test scores.

International Student Requirements for ROTC Participation

All VMI cadets participate in Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) in one of four branches: Army, Navy/Marines, Air Force/Space Force, or Coast Guard. International students participate in ROTC training but are not eligible for a U.S. military commission. International cadets may use their ROTC training toward service in their home country’s military.
