Committed to supporting cadets on their journey towards academic excellence.
At the heart of the Miller Academic Center is a commitment to nurture the academic growth and success of every cadet at VMI. The mission of the Miller Academic Center is to provide academic support that will guide cadets toward their degrees and empower them to excel in their academic pursuits and future achievements. Toward this mission, the Center:
- Identifies and coordinates need-specific learning skills programs to be offered to the Corps
- Coordinates peer tutoring and Group Study Sessions
- Provides advisors the information and training necessary for them to guide their advisees
- Serves as Dean’s representative to the S-2 by meeting regularly to train and coordinate with them as they lead their peers in learning and support programs.
Academic Advising
Upon entry into VMI, each cadet is assigned a faculty advisor who, unless the cadet subsequently changes academic major, will work with the cadet until graduation.
During the first year there is extensive contact between the advisor and cadet in order to facilitate the cadet’s transition into the VMI culture, assist the cadet in mastering the academic policies and regulations, and assist the cadet in coordinating the demands of a multi-faceted academic and co-curricular experience.
As cadets advance through their cadetship, they are expected to assume increased responsibility for complying with academic standards and regulations, initiating the use of support services, and making good decisions about the integration of the academic and co-curricular activities.
Academic Advising guides cadets through the exploration and clarification of their academic, career and life goals to help them develop skills and strategies that will contribute to their academic success and enable them to achieve a balanced engagement in co-curricular and academic activities. Faculty advisors both support and challenge cadets in an effort to increase each cadet’s confidence and self-sufficiency until graduation.
Standards for Continued Enrollment – A cadet in residence must meet specific academic standards to be eligible to return for the following semester. For cadets planning to return for the subsequent semester, academic classification will be based on the published Academic Standards
Readmission – If a cadet has been away from VMI for one or more semesters, he or she must apply for readmission by June 1 for the fall semester and November 1 for the spring semester. Requirements for Readmission
Dismissal – A cadet who receives a second academic suspension is dismissed from VMI and is ineligible to apply for readmission.
Committee on Academic Appeals (CAA) – The Committee on Academic Appeals advises the Deputy Superintendent for Academics and Dean of the Faculty on appeals by cadets for exceptions to the academic regulations.
FERPA – Virginia Military Institute complies with the provision of federal laws governing the privacy and disclosure of cadet information in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). Under the federal laws, all cadets have a number of rights concerning his/her records at VMI.
Academic Support Programs
Peer Tutoring Program & Group Study Sessions (GSS)
We are excited to offer both peer tutoring and group study sessions for many core curriculum courses as well as some major-specific courses. Peer tutoring is scheduled by appointment, and group study sessions (GSS) are held weeknights at 2000.
College Success Series Workshops
The College Success Series is a program that provides cadets with the opportunity to learn strategies to be successful at VMI. Cadets can sign up for individual workshops or the entire series. Each session is 30 minutes and will be held multiple times each week to increase participation opportunities.
MAC Cadet Academic Recovery (CAR) Program
The Cadet Academic Recovery (CAR) program is an academic support plan for cadets on Academic Probation that is designed to help them identify areas for improvement and develop effective academic and time-management skills. Cadets on academic probation are required to participate in the program, and they will meet with an Academic Support Coordinator at the MAC who will work with them to develop a personalized plan for academic improvement. This plan will likely include some combination of regular check-in appointments, attendance at College Success Series Workshops, Group Study Sessions (GSS), and peer tutoring, use of a daily planner to keep track of obligations, exams, and due dates, and the use of the many academic support resources available on post (the MAC, Writing, Center, Math Resource Center, Library, professors’ office hours, etc.).
Academic Saturday Training
Primarily for 4th Class cadets, but others are invited to attend. Each session covers a topic related to cadet success. Please contact Capt. Tyree at tyreeks@vmi.edu for dates and additional details.
